Ohio University Fellowships

2024-2025 Baker Peace Fellowship

Every year, the Contemporary History Institute (CHI) awards one or two Baker Peace Fellowships to doctoral candidates who have advanced to the ABD stage. I was awarded this competitive fellowship during the 2024-2025 academic year. The Baker Peace Fellowship is awarded through the John and Elizabeth Baker Peace Studies Program at Ohio University. It supports Ph.D. candidates in the Contemporary History Institute who focus on the study of conflict and conflict resolution. The fellowship provides a stipend to facilitate dissertation completion or research, allowing recipients to visit archives, conduct further research, or present at academic conferences. Established in the 1980s, the program aims to advance teaching and scholarship in peace studies.

“Some students use these fellowships to visit archives or libraries for further dissertation research. Other students use the funding to attend and present their research at academic conferences,”
— Dr. Alec Holcombe, associate professor of history and director of the Contemporary History Institute (CHI).

2020 & 2023 Contemporary History Institute Fellowships

Each year, the Contemporary History Institute (CHI) at Ohio University awards a single competitive fellowship to an incoming doctoral student. This fellowship allows the awardee to forgo teaching assistant responsibilities in their first and fourth years to focus on their scholarship, while serving as a teaching assistant in their second and third years of the doctoral program. Additionally, CHI provides financial assistance for travel and research, supporting students as they prepare their dissertations. The CHI awarded me this competitive fellowship in the 2020-2021 & 2023-2024 academic school years.
